Experience more than 50 works that demonstrate the diversity of Beverly McIver’s thematic approach to painting over 25 years.
In high school, McIver found solace in dressing as a clown, which allowed her to explore identity in the safe comfort of disguise. The element remained with her once she entered college; her interest in painting became an opportunity for costumed self-portraits, as well as portraits of those around her. Early paintings reflect McIver’s relationship with her sister Renee, her initial explorations of identity and self-expression using clown makeup, and perceptions of stereotypes.
